Planners Talk Back: Educational Opportunities

What educational opportunities are you offering in 2014?

Sam Burrell

We are traveling to Tunica, Mississippi, and Memphis, Tennessee, to learn about the history of the Delta, music and civil rights. In Tunica, we will visit the Tunica Museum, where they have such good information about the history of the Mississippi River. In Memphis, we’ll learn all about Elvis at Graceland and then visit the National Civil Rights Museum that will have recently opened after major renovations.

We take about 50 leaders from the Dubuque area to Washington, D.C., every year. We talk to our local legislators about what we’re doing in our city and people who live in D.C. who were once Dubuque residents also attend a reception.

On this trip, we also tour a different venue or two in the city.

With Collette, we are going on a 29-day excursion to Australia and New Zealand. We figured, if you are going to go, you should see it all.

We will sometimes be traveling by train, have the chance to snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef, spend time with the Aborigines and even have the opportunity to eat the grub that the Aborigines live on for nutrition and water. The entire itinerary is awesome.

This summer, we are offering a 14-day program in Russia that includes 12 nights aboard a river boat. We will spend three nights in Moscow; cruise for six nights on the Rybinsk, Onega and Lagoda lakes and the Volga, Svir and Neva rivers; and spend three nights in St. Petersburg.

Just a few of the highlights will include exploring the Kremlin and the Armory Museum, the wooden architecture on Kizhi Island, and enjoying a traditional Russian barbecue lunch and folklore show in Mandrogi.

David McDonald, a Russian history professor at UW Madison, will be part of the trip and offer discussions.

With Citslinc International, we are taking a seven-day trip to China. We will spend time in Beijing [and] Shanghai and cruise the Yangtze River for three days.

We will explore the Forbidden City and other sites in Beijing, see the Great Wall and experience the largest hydroelectric project in the world on our cruise. We will also see the famous Bund district in Shanghai, the financial center of this fastest-growing city in China.

I’ve been to China about 20 times, and it is one of my favorite places.
