My first stop on Beale Street is always Memphis Music. Proprietor Malcolm Anthony, known as the Doctor of Bluesology, claims to offer the largest selection of blues for sale in the country.
“Every form of music ever created in America, including jazz, gospel, country and rock ’n’ roll, has been influenced by the blues. All the music here reflects that blues influence,” he said.
In his jam-packed shotgun store, Anthony listens intently to his customers, who have included Robert Plant, Santana, Charlie Daniels and B.B. King, in order to lead them in the right direction for the blues sound they like best.
But it’s also true that Memphis music offers a bounty of art for those who love music. Handcrafted clocks, neckties and even the coolest toilet seats in the world, all with a music theme, are guaranteed not to give anyone the blues.
