CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Go Ahead Tours announced a new tour to Puglia, a corner of Italy that has escaped much of the country’s influx of tourism.
The 12-day tour travels to the heel of Italy’s boot region. Go Ahead Tours will send the first group on the Puglia and Southern Italy Tour starting March 2012.
“Puglia’s beautiful coastline, historic towns and abundant, flavorful cuisine made it a great fit alongside our other tours of Italy,” said Christy Waller, vice president of marketing and analysis for Go Ahead Tours. “More than the sites and the food, though, Puglia’s tourist economy isn’t quite as built up as other parts of Italy, which will allow our travelers to connect with the locals and see Puglia through their eyes.
“We’re always on the lookout for secluded destinations, and we think our travelers will enjoy discovering a side of Italy they may not have experienced before.”
The tour treats passengers to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including of Castel del Monte, Basilica of St. Nicholas, Matera and Alberobello. Fresh seafood from the Adriatic Sea is a regional cuisine specialty, as well as its bread and pasta. The area is traditionally known as Italy’s breadbasket, and produces more olive oil than any other place in the country.
The tour visits Naples and Sorrento, as well as a possible added two-night extension to Rome.
