Using Inbound Iowa, a receptive tour operator, our mystery trip to Greenfield, Iowa, was such a fun bargain. We were treated to some time at a grand opera house that is in the midst of restoration, a gentleman who pays tribute to our servicemen and time at the Henry Wallace farm, an attraction that showcases the bygone days of farming. The town square in Greenfield might bring back memories for those that saw “Cold Turkey,” a 1971 film starring Dick Van Dyke. It was filmed there.

For $50 per person, we routinely sell out two or three motorcoaches four or five times a year to go to the Lyceum Theater in Arrow Rock, Missouri. It is one of the oldest professional regional theaters in the state, and they present the gamut in plays. The day also includes lunch and some time at the Isle of Capri Casino in Booneville. We used to do this just one time a year, but it was such a hit, we had to succumb to the enthusiastic response.

Group leaders can do just a little research to discover what to see and do in Glendale, Kentucky, a little town that offers history, shopping and great food. We have lunch at a historical little restaurant — the Whistle Stop — and stroll through the cute antique and gift shops. All are in easy walking distance. There is even a horse and carriage on hand. We combine this affordable afternoon with a guided tour of Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace, a national historic park near Hodgenville.

The Secrest Auditorium in Zanesville is an older, beautiful and very large venue that hosts all kinds of entertainment, from country music to dance. It’s terrific for us because we’d have to travel to a big city to enjoy these professional productions, and of course, the tickets are a bargain. The theater is very accommodating to groups. I’d highly recommend some time in our historical city that is also home to some terrific restaurants.

We’ve been going to St. Louis for 15 years, and we’re still doing things we’ve never done before — much of it free. This comfortable-sized city offers everything a group enjoys in the biggest cities. I highly suggest our wonderful guide, Linda Koenig with Gateway Tours in St. Louis. This personable woman, also a master gardener with the Missouri Botanical Garden, may add some cost to your trip, but she is worth every nickel.

The Hiwassee River Rail Adventure that begins in Etowah, Tennessee, is just fantastic. The experience begins in a farmhouse restaurant where the home cooking is out of this world. The beautiful train winds up Bald Mountain like a corkscrew, and you’re privy to the sights of the Hiwassee River Gorge. It’s a great day at a great price.
