The Wine Lands of South Africa
If you’re a wine lover, you’ve likely sampled some South African wines, which have been steadily growing in popularity. And those wines probably originated in the lush region around the town of Stellenbosch.
Stellenbosch, which means “City of Oaks” in Dutch, is part tourist destination, part college town and part wine hub. Wine tours from Cape Town bring visitors to Stellenbosch and the surrounding areas for winery visits, upscale shopping and dining, natural beauty and boutique shopping opportunities.
We spent an afternoon exploring the wine lands during our time in Cape Town. The tour included stops at two different wineries in the area. Warwick Vineyards, the first South African winery owned by a woman, offered a seven-wine tasting flight on a beautiful outdoor patio. Anura Vineyards, named with the Latin word for amphibian and decorated with images of frogs and lily pads, featured another flight of wines accompanied by cheeses that were also produced on-site at the farm.
