WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Viking River Cruises continues to expand its river cruising options with plans to launch eight Longships in 2014, in addition to the 10 ships it will launch next year. Longships, Viking’s newest class of river cruise vessel, first launched in March.

The 190-passenger Longships feature off-center corridors that allow Viking to maximize cabin space and squared-off hulls that create space for an additional indoor/outdoor Aquavit Lounge at the bow of the ship. Each Longship is 443 feet long with 95 cabins, solar panels and energy-efficient hybrid engines that reduce vibrations.

“The river cruise segment is rapidly growing, as more travelers are inspired to experience old destinations in a new way,” said Torstein Hagen, Viking chairman. “We are pleased to continue our expansion to meet that demand.”

The Viking Baldur and the Viking Magni, two Longships ordered for 2013, will start sailing in late August and September, respectively. The ships will sail Viking’s 15-day Grand European Tour between Amsterdam and Budapest.  The Baldur will also sail the eight-day Rhine Getaway from Amsterdam to Switzerland, while the Magni will travel the eight-day Danube Waltz from Passau, Germany, to Budapest.
