Bankers Talk Back: Favorite Fall Destination

Autumn. Red leaf over blurred background
What’s a favorite fall destination?

The fresh air, the smells, the cooler temperatures, the massive colors — there’s no place like Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in the fall. We love just driving through the Smoky Mountains.  The Old Mill Restaurant sits by the river, and it has a waterwheel that turns. Eating there and simply sitting by the river is like going back in time.

In the fall, we want to explore the outdoors as much as possible. We have taken two-day trips/cruises that everyone loves when it comes to enjoying the autumn colors. On the Mississippi River, we take a luncheon cruise to the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin, where wildlife watching is at its best. On the St. Croix River out of Stillwater, Minnesota, we take a paddleboat ride and luncheon cruise.

And I will add that Wisconsin is a great place to see the beautiful foliage — anywhere in Wisconsin makes me happy in the fall.

When we’re in Pigeon Forge in the Smoky Mountains, fall just permeates the air. The whole town decorates, and everywhere you look, there are pumpkins, haystacks and scarecrows. We love to eat at Applewood, a farm/restaurant in nearby Sevierville where they have the best fritters ever.

I think our favorite fall experience has been a cruise out of New Jersey that took us to Boston, Portland, Maine and Nova Scotia. The weather was wonderful, and the colors were magnificent. A favorite memory was having a lobster dinner in Portland in its downtown harbor. They served the lobster on newspaper; and thank goodness for the bibs, as our hands and chins were covered with butter.

We head to Wisconsin to get our taste of fall. Along the way, we stop at Breitbach’s, a restaurant in a little-bitty town: Balltown, Iowa. It’s an old stagecoach place with a buffet with brats and sauerkraut and everything autumn.

In Wisconsin, we visit an apple orchard to buy cider and apple doughnuts, and then do a cheese stop to bring back all of our favorite cheeses.

This year, we’re taking an 11-day fall trip to Amish country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I hear it’s gorgeous.
